I'd say there are three types of live albums. The first is the usual performance (or compilation of performances) from the last tour where the band plays the hits. Then there is the rarer performance where the band plays an entire record in full. And then there is the even more special performance where the band commissions new material or completely reinterprets old one. Ulver seem to dabble a lot in the latter lately.

If Ulver were one of the X Men characters, they'd easily be Mystique. Ever changing, always in a state of flux, and able to morph their identity with incredible ease. When we last left off, Ulver dropped that "Zodiac Album" with the unpronounceable title. Highly psychedelic, jammy, and meditative, if you know the band and what they're all about by now, you know there's only one thing you can ever expect next out of them: the unexpected.

Within the realm of experimentation in the metal genre, Sunn O))) and Ulver need little introduction. Both have consistently pushed boundaries over the past decade, the latter barely even being metal anymore at this point. So really, it was only a matter of time before some sort of joint effort between them spawned in 2014's Terrestrials, which can only be described as a complete and natural synthesis of the parties involved.
