Cryogen - New EP Available For (Free) Download

Denver's Cryogen are releasing their new EP, "Psalms Of Deceit", for free. The digital version was released since yesterday (February 17) as a "pay what you want" download, meaning it can be downloaded for free.

Cryogen comments: "We are offering our fans the opportunity to pay what they want for our new EP. That includes paying nothing. We're leaving it up to our fans to decide what the album is worth. We're leaving that decision up to each individual, and we're happy to be the first extreme metal band to do that. We feel that this is the future of music distribution and that there is no better time to do this than right now. While record labels sit in fear of losing sales to piracy, we believe it's up to independent bands, like Cryogen, to help pave a new way of distributing music."

"Psalms Of Deceit" cover artwork and tracklisting:

01. Faith And Suicide
02. Man Is War
03. This Nightmare
04. Omega
05. Forever Broken
06. Break These Chains

The album can be streamed or downloaded (free newsletter registration required if you download the album for free) at this location.

Syk,

We did an exhaustive search for metal bands doing the same thing but didn't find any in our searches. Lots of rock and folk bands, but no metal. Looks like we aren't actually the first, so thanks for pointing that out. It was really just something to catch people's attention, but we weren't trying to be pretentious or anything like that.

Defiantly let us know what you think, we'd be interested to know.

Thanks,
Ryan

This is a good idea for the buyer to pay whatever they want for an album. However, I don't think I would do it for any of my musical projects.

edit - sounds like a hundred other bands for whose work I don't care (style? groovy, wannabe-dark, wannabe-melodeath-metalcore/gothenburg-with-a-touch-of-"thrash"-posers) so I won't bother with the newsletter. Variety may be a high point over all the similars, or maybe that only comes to mind because of the slower, wannabe-atmosperic, instrumental sound of the final track.

Sounds bitchy? Yeah, but you did say "defiantly"

Hey n/p. That's your opinion and i'm glad you took the time to listen.

BTW, I looked into the Woe pay-what-you-want page, and they don't offer a free download link. Just a donate button where you you'd need to donate something before you'd be able to download it. So actually, our initial press release statement still stands true.

Haha, no, not quite. Signing up for an e-newsletter might as well be equal to paying $0.01 through Paypal. Even if not, there's The Disciples Of Zoldon, Heathen, Anacrusis and ...aaaarrghh... which have offered pretty much all their recordings thus far for unrestricted free download on their respective sites. So... yeah. Don't worry

death ? thrash ? death/doom/prog ? Hail Zoldon!

he's not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays

Free isn't the same as pay what you want. Sure, what we're doing isn't anything new, but if you want to be technical about it, I haven't seen another metal band doing exactly what were doing. If you can prove me wrong then do it, but don't post links to bands doing pay what you want without a free option, or bands doing strictly free then claim it's exactly the same thing. And how is signing up for a free newsletter equal to paying $0.01 through paypal? I get your point, but it's not the same thing at all. Most kids have a yahoo or hotmail account but don't have a paypal account since it requires a credit card. How would they easily get the album if all we offered was paypal?

Anyway it goes, we're just trying to get the music out there and we figured it was worth a shot. It's worked out pretty well so far.
