Lordaeron - Nottingham, England, 7th March 2010

As the Polish metalheads of Nottingham descended upon this rather cosy venue, the Polish death metal band known as Vader had already made their escape. This was supposed to be a Vader headline show, but apparently due to "drum equipment issues" the band, or rather apparently the tour manager decided to pull the plug on the show at the last minute. Professional. Read more...

Rammstein Sinks Their "U-Boot" In Tallinn's "Südenhafen" (If You Know What I Mean) - 24.02

Author's commentary: This present review contains pejorative comments on the Estonian audience. Please keep in mind that this does not apply to the good people inside the fan-zone who I am forced to believe, based on consistent eyewitness reports, had a fantastic time. To others who might feel offended, well... fuck you. Read more...

Die Apokalyptischen Reiter - Nottingham, England, 21st February 2010

Until last year, Die Apokalyptischen Reiter were only known in the UK by the most exotic metalheads who had travelled to various German festivals and discovered them there. The band made their way over to England last summer for a successful showing at the Bloodstock Open Air, and were back again for the Hard Rock Hell festival in Wales. Now it is Britainmania, as the horsemen undertake their first ever UK tour. Read more...

Freak Kitchen - Hessenhalle, Gießen, Germany, 06.02.2010

The first week of February I was in Germany, in Karlsruhe near Frankfurt. I wasn't there because of any concert, which is often the reason for traveling for me. As you might guess, this had to be fixed somehow and, hey-ho, as luck had it, Freak Kitchen was in the area. A lucky coincidence like that has never happened with me before and such a chance is never to be missed. Rubbing my hands I was beginning to think that this trip was indeed promising to be really good. It was an easy task – a mere matter of persuasive suggestion – to get Daniel aka promonex interested in the gig as well, and thus it was decided to hit the Freak Kitchen gig in Gießen on the Saturday night together. Read more...

Metal Storm Valentine's Day Special

Believe it or not, but we at the Metal Storm Towers do have a heart. Not a particularly romantic one, but still we more or less respect traditions - even the shitty commercial ones. Since we also tend to have a biting sense of humor, here's our little Valentine's Day Special... with a twist - or what did you expect. Read more...

Barry's Top 25 Of 2000-2009

In 2000 I was 12 years old and had no appreciation of any form of music. It is therefore safe to assume that over the last ten years, things have changed quite a lot. It started with albums like Muse's "Origin Of Symmetry" and then Slipknot's "Iowa" in 2001. I was hooked. Music finally meant something to me. Here in 2010 I can look back at the decade as the one that metal introduced itself to me. I have tried to put together a top 25 albums of the last ten years, but as we all know opinions and tastes change in time, so this could not bear any resemblance to my musical tastes in another ten years. We'll just have to wait and find out. Read more...

Marduk, Anaal Nathrakh - Leicester, England, 6th February 2010

Black metal. Leicester, an unusual tour destination, and a venue clearly inexperienced at handling shows of this size. The lack of organisation at this venue was clear from the get-go as the doors opened one hour late due to the venue's normal sound guy messing up the whole sound system and then running away for someone else to sort out. Eventually, however, we made our way inside to a nicely sized room with small but comfortable, intimate if you will, stage setting. Read more...

Doc's Obligatory Top 100 Of The Past Decade

So I was out on my front porch having a cigarette and reading (which is when I do most of my incredibly genius & profound thinking that you can see displayed in my writing), considering how I'm going to go about blogging my top 100 of the past decade. I considered the fact that there will probably be considerably more bitching than there will be positive responses, then I thought about Texas Hold 'Em Poker. Now, poker may seem completely irrelevant here, but there is some correlation, let me explain: Most people who have played poker enough in their life begin to form a signature playing style, I'm very aggressive in my poker playing, I either win extremely fast, or lose hard and fast (usually the latter). What many people don't realize is that the way a person plays poker is generally a good sign of how they live their life - either safe, with no big losses but no quick wins, or people like myself who are the all or nothing types. So how does that tie into my top 100? Well, I figured I could either try and please as many people as possible in how I approach presenting this thing (while still pissing off a handful of people), or I can try to win the award for inciting the most bitching. So here goes... Read more...

Evile, Warbringer - Nottingham, England, 21st January 2010

The Basement of Rock City in Nottingham sees its first thrash assault of the new year. A cold January evening, as the doors opened and the room became inhabited it first appeared that it would be a quiet one with most people choosing the comfort of their homes and a CD player over the real thing. Things soon changed however. Read more...

My Top 100 of past decade, after two weeks of consideration

Okay MSers, I'm nowhere near as organized and quick as some of our other staff and elites here, so that explains the slight delay in getting my top list up. I started with about 250 possible choices, stared at it for a few days and made some notes, and then went back to my collection and started listening to some that I hadn't experienced for a long while to do a final check on my thoughts. My basic ideas were: how much did this album change my ideas towards metal? how much did this album change me? do I love the album from beginning to end, or just most of the songs? Read more...
