Black Fucking Metal.

A localised drop in temperature was reported in San José, California, prompting me to grab my black-o-meter and head there to investigate. Unnaturally donning my hazmat suit to protect myself from the face-melting warmth and salty stench of the paradisical shores, I left the subzero air conditioning of The Hostile Hostel, and started my quest. True, cold, black metal is a rare sight in the US, so I hardly expected to find anything. Suddenly, the black-o-meter started screaming (literally, what other sound do you think a black metal detector would make?) as I approached a blood-stained door covered in occult symbols set in a rock face. That’s always a promising sign, so I entered.

Walking down a narrow staircase littered with the bones of man and animal alike, each step made the faint shouts in the distance deep down more audible. “Chaos! Evil! Fire!” they were saying, and as the bone-chilling northern winds of Scandinavia seemed to waft through the dark tunnel, I felt right at home. I finally reached the large cavern where Black Fucking Cancer was holding their ceremony, and there was not a trace of the godforsaken sunshine in sight, so at this point I was even able to take my sunglasses off, and search my blackpack™ for the most blasphemous metal t-shirt to put on.

As the band launched their second litany against humankind, life, and all that is good in the world, dubbed “Obscene Lusting Dagger”, the snappy smattering of the snare drums and simplistic yet melodic riffs almost made me think I was listening to Watain’s Casus Luciferi. Next to me, I saw a representative from Osmose Productions repeatedly stab his finger with a knife to write bloody notes in a dusty, obscure Tome ov Evil. I think I heard him mumble the words Procreate Inverse over and over, but I can’t be sure, what with the thick blacket™ of noise covering the room. It might as well have been some indecipherable language; French, maybe Danish? Later, I would find out he was actually speaking in reverse. Figures.

The ceremony that followed was a very familiar experience, but performed well enough that I didn’t care, and I enjoyed it a lot. A dark ambience fell over the room as Black Fucking Cancer begun the centrepiece of their black mass, “Procreate Inverse”. Sinister, melancholic melodies punctuated by ear-splitting discord akin to Leviathan washed over me, before the band launched into an unrelenting Marduk-like breakneck pace. After over 15 minutes of the excellent title track, I left the room to the tones of the band covering “Krossfyre” by Katharsis, put my t-shirt black into my blackpack, and put my sunglasses black on.

It was good to find the Dark Lord’s message being authentically spread even in this heavenly warm place, and the misanthropic celebrations of plagues to ravage the Earth felt appropriately inappropriate in times such as these, I thought, as I walked black up the staircase, out into the light, being kept at comfortably cold temperatures by my freezing bones all the way black to The Hostile Hostel. Great stuff.
