Alice In Chains - Original Bassist Dead At 44

Former Alice In Chains bass player Mike Starr has passed away. His body was found on Tuesday March 8th in a Salt Lake City home. Starr was 44 years old.

Starr was Alice In Chains' first bass player and was a part of the line-up from 1987 till 1993. He appeared on the band's first two albums, Facelift and Dirt, but left in the middle of the "Dirt Tour" and was replaced by current bassist Mike Inez.

Back in April 1994, Starr was sentenced to 30 days in the Houston jail for misdemeanor drug possession. More recently in 2009, Starr appeared on the third season of "Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew" - one of VH1's bizarre reality series. Last month, he was arrested for felony possession of a controlled substance. Salt Lake City cops said he had 6 Xanax pills and 6 Opana (painkiller) pills when he was busted.

Alice In Chains - Complete Mixing New Album

Alice In Chains have posted the following band update on their MySpace:

"As most of you who have been paying attention have already figured out, the new Alice In Chains album is finally complete. We've been in the studio since October, and since it all began we celebrated 6 major holidays, elected a new President of the United States, crowned new World Series and Super Bowl champs, endured fires, earthquakes, & blackouts in and around Los Angeles, took a 2 1/2 week break to go to Australia, and to cap it all off, William & Jerry finally euthanized their beards.

This long, arduous process is complete, and although there's still a lot of work to be done, the songs are in the can and that's the most important thing. So what can I tell you when I look back on the last six months? I can tell you that the monotony of 12 to 16 hour days in the studio can be broken up by multiple costumes & hair styles, hours and hours of dice games, any sort of dialogue delivered in a heavily accentuated southern drawl, and a slew of special guests dropping by the studio.

Most of all I can tell you that some amazing songs were written and recorded. From the heaviest riff-dripping gut puncher to the most sadly beautiful song I think this band has ever recorded, I honestly believe that this album will return Alice In Chains to the top of the hard rock heap. So now the next few months are dedicated to things like album artwork, lining up interviews & press, shooting videos, planning tours, and figuring out whether to bury Jerry & William's beards at sea or donate them to science.

Hopefully these new songs will strike a chord and make a similar impact on all of you out there that were moved by this band in the first place. These songs have definitely done that with me, and frankly I'm getting pretty sick and tired of loving this stuff alone, so I can't wait for it to be released so it'll become your favorite record of 2009 and we can discuss it at the shows.

So clear a slot in your CD shelf and schedule maternity leave from work in September, because the long drought will be over soon."

Alice In Chains - "The Essential Alice In Chains" To Be Released In September

Celebrating their 20th Anniversary, Alice In Chains are set to release The Essential Alice In Chains CD collection on Sept 5th. I am proud to offer limited copies of the CDs for review and giveaways plus assets (album cover, press release and video player). Please let me know if you are interested in attending the press day.

Ten years after their last concert, Alice In Chains has decided to reclaim their heritage and embark on a surprise U.S. club tour as a warm up for their 5-month tour of the UK and Europe. They returned for several U.S. festival dates and will pick up again in the fall (dates to be announced soon). The band looks forward to its 20th anniversary next year with the release of The Essential Alice In Chains, which will arrive in stores Sept 5th on Columbia/Legacy, a division of Sony BMG Music Entertain-ment.

The first comprehensive two-CD collection ever issued on Alice In Chains is a chronological ascent from 1990 (four cuts from their debut album, Facelift, including "We Die Young," title track of the three-song Columbia debut EP released earlier that year) up through 1999, ("Get Born Again" and "Died," the two newly recorded tracks on their three-CD box set retrospective, Music Bank). The Essential Alice In Chains gathers its 28 selections from all four original albums they recorded, Facelift (1990), Dirt (1992), the self-titled Alice In Chains (1995), and the live 'acoustic' MTV Unplugged (1996), as well as from their two EPs, SAP (1992) and Jar Of
Flies (1994). Also included are remixes of their two songs from the Last Action Hero original motion picture soundtrack album (1993, the only band with two cuts on the album).
