Van Halen - David Lee Roth Announces Retirement
Following the death of Eddie Van Halen almost exactly a year ago and the announcement that his namesake band Van Halen was finished, frontman David Lee Roth recently told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that he is planning to retire, saying that that his upcoming five shows at House of Blues at Mandalay Bay (on New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, January 5th, 7th and 8th, 2022) will be his last ever performances, but opted not give an explanation.
Roth - who was a member of Van Halen from 1974 to 1985, briefly in 1996 and again from 2006 to Eddie's death last year - said: "I am throwing in the shoes. I'm retiring. This is the first, and only, official announcement... You've got the news. Share it with the world. I'm not going to explain the statement. The explanation is in a safe. These are my last five shows."
Elsewhere in the interview, Roth talked about "the departure of my beloved classmate recently", referring to Eddie: "I am encouraged and compelled to really come to grips with how short time is, and my time is probably even shorter. I thought I might have been the first, frankly... 'Hey Ed, objects in the rear-view mirror are probably me.' And my doctors, my handlers, compelled me to really address that every time I go on stage, I endanger that future."
He also talked about his relationship with Eddie's brother Alex, who was the drummer for Van Halen throughout the band's career: "Al and I have been talking, and I can't speak for him just yet, but he knows what I am about to say. We speak to each other constantly, two or three times a day. We laugh like pirates."
