What happens when you take the mighty talents of Ronnie James Dio, Ritchie Blackmore, and Cozy, and put them together in the same band? You get one of, if not the greatest album of all time. After leaving Deep Purple in 1974, and forming Rainbow, Ritchie Blackmore was making his name a force to be reckoned with. One year later, Rainbow released their debut album, Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. After scoring a minor hit with "Man on the Silver Mountain,", Ritchie and Ronnie decided it was time to step up their game. In 1976, after bringing in Cozy Powell on drums, Tony Carey on keyboards, and Jimmy Bain on bass, Rainbow recorded their masterpiece.

In my opinion this features dio's best vocal performance...he fits in so well with the atmosphere created by the other instruments. And let's not forget, 'Stargazers' is the definition of an 'Epic'.

I think this album is amazing. Stargazer has always been and will always be one of the best tracks ever written. It is the definition of "epic" and long may it continue to inspire many bands. RIP Dio, your voice will always be heard.

I agree to a certain degree with that sentiment, just finished my first ever listens of both the debut and Rising (sometimes the best Christmas presents are the ones you give to yourself ), and I definately prefer the debut. In truth, I only liked two thirds of this album (''Starstruck'' and ''Do You Close Your Eyes'' were a bit weak imo). Though ''Stargazers'' has already become one of my favourite Dio-related songs, absolutely amazing song.

Great album, but too short and I can't stand Starstruck.

But then you get Stargazer later, one of the best songs ever written.

Personally I prefer Gates Of Babylon.

No way. When Dio belts out the line, "I See a Gloowww Arrrooouunnnd Yooouuu", I get chills down my spine.

There was a discussion in the shoutbox the other day about Dio's best performance. I fail to see how it can be anything other than "Stargazer".

Stargazers is my fav. Dio song and Rainbow song but the album definitely doesn't deserve a 9. That would be the rainbow featuring the best of the 1st 3 Rainbow albums (Stargazers, Gates Of Babylon, Man On A Silver Mountain, Catch The Rainbow etc...). That album would be a legendary one. Unfortunately none of the 1st 3 albums with Dio are such masterpieces as they contain some filler.

"The Quaker"
If you're a fan of this album you might want to check out late 70's era Omega (Hungarian band), their song Late Night Show (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FPbUSpJi7M) reminded me of Stargazer. Usually they are more on the "rock" side but damn that song is heavy.

"Do You Close Your Eyes" is weak - but at least it's short!
The rest of the songs are great: the first half is catchy and fun; the last two songs are epic masterpieces!
Dio will live on forever in his music!

I wouldnt call it weak, it is a nice song. But it might be the least interesting one on the album.

Too much rock/pop feeling and not enough metal on that song for me
