Secret Tracks: Songs And Audio Pieces That Were Left Off The Track List

Secret tracks, sometimes also called ghost tracks, unlisted tracks or hidden tracks, are songs or audio pieces that were left off the track list of an album.

The easiest way to hide a secret track is providing the space for a distinct track that is just not listed on the back cover. However, there are also other possibilities:

Multisided records are vinyl records that have more than one groove per side. Therefore, double-grooved LPs can contain the secret track in the second groove.
Moreover, some vinyl records contain audio in the locked groove, which is usually silent and used for keeping the needle from drifting into the label area.

Compact discs may contain secret songs in the pregap of a track. Therefore (depending on the CD player), the secret track is not played automatically, but has to be manually back-scanned to be started.

In general, secret songs are often placed at the end of the final track, which contains the listed song and the unlisted audio separated by some minutes of silence.

Enhanced CDs may contain tracks that are not recognized by regular CD players but can only be detected as multimedia files by a computer.

In rare cases, two tracks have to be played simultaneously in order to either complement each other or to suppress distorted parts, resulting in a reconstructed song.

In general, there seems to be a trend that fewer secret tracks are produced for new releases. Moreover, re-issues of older albums often contain formerly secret tracks as listed bonus tracks or omit them entirely, especially for digital versions of the album.

Please feel free to suggest more examples of secret tracks on metal/hard rock albums.

QOTSA Album Ranking

They are one of the few “mainstream” rock bands that are widely accepted by many metal heads. They have yet to release an album I dislike. Here is my “personal” ranking of all of QOTSA’s studio albums. They’ve been one of my favorite band for over 15 years now. Maybe this will also help some new fans discover more of their discography. Feel free to discuss. I know many will disagree.

2.Queens Of The Stone Age - ...Like Clockwork
3.Queens Of The Stone Age - Era Vulgaris
4.Queens Of The Stone Age - Rated R

Top Metal Albums Each Year I Have Been Alive 2000

A little list series where I list my top 20 favorite metal albums every year starting from the year I was born in.

2000 was a pretty solid year especially for progressive metal, Symphonic metal and power metal, also pretty good year for death metal. This also was the year I started to listen to metal music thanks to those iconic linkin park singles (RIP Chester Bennington).

2.Koyaanisqatsy - From The Yearning To Burst The Perpetual Circle
3.Nevermore - Dead Heart In A Dead World

Had to Play Today (Order Doesn't Mean Terribly Much Here)

Bunch of good songs, here. Gonna compile a list or seven of the songs I can competently play on guitar. I might be happy to teach these, or at least provide some tabs

1June:actually was playing these all in D tuning. When not jamming along to the recording, I tend to use whatever key is my open string / 7 up, a strategy which may change if I ever get around to singing at the same time

1.Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
2.Blind Faith - Blind Faith
3.Queens Of The Stone Age - Queens Of The Stone Age
4.Mastodon - Blood Mountain
5.Elvis Presley - Can't Help Falling in Love

Love It All - 30 Fave Releases Since Y2K

Howzat, two of my all-time fav releases recently turned 10 and 5 years old. They should get anniversary reissues. Make those great bands some more dough, among other things...

Numbers 10 and 28 on this list are so good, I can't really pick favourite songs. Could say that Sons' opening number is a bit forgettable, and The Difference Engine's fourth track might be just a bit too weird for me. Still, I score 'em at around 98 point two. Best possible result, eh?

1.Fatboy Slim - Halfway between the Gutter and the Stars
2.Queens Of The Stone Age - Rated R
3.Offspring - Conspiracy of One
4.Eidolon - Nightmare World
5.Muse - Origin of Symmetry
