Edguy - Next CD Will Be 'Metal And Hard Rock With A Few Wimpy Pop Ballads'

Edguy frontman Tobias Sammet recently answered a number of fan questions via the "Ask Tobias" section of his official web site. A couple of excepts follow:

Q: Compared to the older albums, "Rocket Ride" had more of a hard rock feeling to it rather then the traditional power metal sound. Is this the new direction for Edguy or is the next album going to be more like the early stuff?

Tobias: "I try not to label it, I agree there was more mid-tempo stuff on the new album, but we've had classic rock elements on all of our albums ('Lavatory Love Machine', 'Vain Glory Opera', 'Holy Shadows', 'Holy Water', several ballads...). And we have classic metal stuff on 'Rocket Ride' too ('Sacrifice', 'Return To The Tribe', 'Out Of Vogue', 'Wasted Time'). So I think people tend to this whole change-of-style thing. We've had less uptempo songs but I don't think we can read a general stylistic tendency into that. We just do what we feel we want to do. At least we consider ourselves a traditional hard rock or metal band, whatever you want it to be. And we'll go on doing whatever we wanna do. And I guess this will be metal and hard rock with a few wimpy pop ballads here and there. We've always done that. And we looooove that! :-) I don't know what the next album is going to sound like, but I think it's gonna be powerful and good."

Q: I think the new album "Rocket Ride" is your best to date. Where did you get the inspiration for the song "Sacrifice"?

Tobias: "'Sacrifice' speaks about feelings that you have, when your work is done and you lock the hotel room door behind you, when you have the time to take deep breaths and the world around you seems to slow down a bit. Then you got so many things to think about, you worry and you have doubts and all these things... As everybody. Usually I live quite fast, I got people around me all the time, I am constantly on the road and keep myself busy and busy, there's not so much time left to think. And it's quite natural that as soon as your body gets the chance to cool down a bit, you get sucked into that black hole. It's quite normal... I got used to it, so I don't worry. The first time it felt strange to fall into that black hole but now I even got an apartment on the other side, with pink inflatable palm trees. I'm used to it... I made it my black pink place... Anyway: I chose a different way of life, I got the best life I could ever dream of. But it's different. And as everybody I got to make sacrifices... Aftershow party in the black pink place..."

Edguy - New CD & DVD "Superheroes"

As posted on the official website:

On September 5th a new EP and a DVD-Special will be released simultaneously, and even though they have the same title ("Superheroes" and "Superheroes - Heroic DVD edition!) they're gonna differ from each other totally.

The CD "Superheroes" will contain 5 brand new songs plus a bonus track. Tobias Sammet says, "One of the tracks is a bombastic uptempo epic that's reminiscent of a mixture of heavy Queen, Richard Wagner & Avantasia. So it was a MUST to ask Michael Kiske to do some guest vocals. To me music is about goose bumps, and I had a lot when listening to Michi! To make it fair we have decided that the CD shall be out in stores for the price of a CD single only! So make sure you persuade your friends that they buy it and don't copy it, maybe quality and value for money could be a promising kind of 'copy-protection'!

The DVD will contain the brand new video-clip "Superheroes", a couple of songs filmed live in Brazil, plenty of "behind the scenes" footage, a slide show, an extensive studio report with interviews and besides the chance to follow Edguy backstage - according to the band "a lot of bullshit and stupid jokes. Our fans will love the fun part of it and I'm sure to them it's a classic. And I am sure Edguy haters will hate us even more and will think we are a bunch of wanna-be-funny-gay-idiots." The DVD will have a running time of approximately 80 minutes and is gonna be available for the price of a DVD single as well! More information coming soon!

Edguy - New EP Scheduled For September 05

Hi,

Just a short message: We've just come back from our trip to Granada, Spain Edguy.netto play the Atarfe-Vega-Rock festival. It was a lot of fun, although it's been pretty cold in the venue. That was not what we expected from Spain but however, you people who were there were really great. Some technical
problems on stage and we couldn't bring the whole show, but what the fuck - we gave our best and you gave your best, that's what counts. We all had a great evening!

After the show we had a kind of pre-birthday party for Eggi, together with the Primal Fear guys. Great guys, great fun. We will not mention any details, I am not gonna reveal that Jens woke up in his bath tub full of water and that I had to be carried out of the venue by two of our crew guys later that night. Well, you see: We had fun!!! Felix had a food war with himeself which is not very funny. There's a lot of people who starve while two Kiwis accidently slipped out of Felix' hand and exploded on the wall. To his excuse we should mention that he wouldn't have managed to throw them to Namibia anyway. So I want to stress we can't speak about waste of food in this case.

Meanwhile we are working full-steam on our new EP that is estimated to be released in September. A full length album is to follow early next year. I liked the concept of delivering a big value-for-money thing as the official single last time just like the King Of Fools EP. We got very good response to that and we are so creative at the moment that there will be a lot of material as it seems. We'll see, can't tell too much at this point. But we are working on that one. Anyway, the material sounds good, sound like Edguy, very fresh, very cheeky and of course epic at times. You'll hear it later. Have a great week and happy birthday Eggi,

Tobias!

Edguy: Stupid name?

In an interview with Electricbasement.com, EDGUY guitarist Jens Ludwig explained where the band's odd name came from, "No meaning. We were just very young when we formed this band," he said. "Fourteen years old. Back then, we had this stupid teacher with a similar sounding name. We just had this funny idea of changing it and making the band's name out of it. This stupid name has followed us for 12 years now. We've talked so many times about changing the name, but we can be sure that no band in the world will have the same stupid name as us (laughs)." German melodic metallers EDGUY have announced the details of their upcoming EP, "King Of Fools", due on February 2, 2004 through Nuclear Blast Records.

The complete track listing for "King Of Fools" is as follows:

01. King Of Fools (3:30)
02. New Age Messiah (5:58)

"Hellfire Club" is due for release on March 15, 2004.

The follow-up to 2001's "Mandrake", which includes a collaboration with the German film orchestra Babelsberg (THE SCORPIONS), was produced by EDGUY and Norman Meiritz, with additional assistance from Sascha Paeth (RHAPSODY, ANGRA), who was responsible for the drum sound on the album. The final mix took place at the famous Finnvox Studios (NIGHTWISH, STRATOVARIUS) in Helsinki, Finland.
