When it comes to thrash, 2011 treated us quite nicely. Bands like Warbringer, Havok, and Toxic Holocaust were a few on the list that gave my neck a workout. And then there was Venom. I didn't have my hopes or expectations very high, but Fallen Angels was really a disappointing album.

To be up front about it, this album is a mess. Venom put out such a basic album this time around. The guitar riffs are the definition of serviceable, bland, and free of the sharp impact which can make them hit so hard when structured in a more interesting manner. None of them really stuck with me. There weren't any of those "damn, that was so awesome I have to listen to it again" moments that happen every 5 seconds when I'm listening to Warbringer.

I was so disappointed by their latest two releases. Cronos is out of inspiration. I really adored Cast in stone and Resurrection as well as the brutal direction they decided to adopt. I completely disagree with the guys that say that they tried to imitate Pantera. To me the logic evolution of the fathers of extreme metal scene was this one. On the contrary Metal Black and especially Hell showed me that Cronos as the only original member of the legendary trio decided to follow a certain formula apparently pushed by whichever obligation he had by a music contract. I 'm not waiting for the new Welcome to hell or Black metal but he should try to release a decent album.

This is gonna be a 15-track album with about 6 good songs. It's been this way for a while now, I don't suppose Cronos plans on changing the formula any time soon. Course, I'll still buy it like the sucker I am.

Wait, a musician is promoting his band by claiming only good things about new material? That's a first.

I don't think they're progressing for better or worse. They've always just been bad.

I've listened to all but two of their albums, and not one of them is worth more than a 5/10 from me. I don't care who they influenced, to me they just plain suck. Besides, Venom isn't the only influential name in the extreme metal scene.

Venom's main problem is they never know when to trim the fat... too many songs, only 50% of the material is good/original.
Other then the filler songs, a really stunning band.

Question: Do I waste time listening to this just so I can give it a low rating.

Agree with the fact that Venom on their latest records have a hard time delivering a solid album. They lately deliver albums with a few good songs and some fillers that sound uninsiring. Though with all their good songs you can build up a nice repertoire.
I certainly don't agree with all of their albums being just worth a 5, than it's just not your type of music and you'll probably never like it...

If you didn't like their first two albums, don't even bother with this one lol.

It was kind of a joke to myself. I've listened to every Venom full-length so far (even though the highest rating I'd give is a 5/10). Don't ask why. Maybe I'm a musical masochist, I dunno. But I'm probably going to listen to this one too, just to say I did and just to say I know they still suck.

I can't let the possibility go that this might actually be a decent album.

I gave it a 10 because I still think this is better than Hell and it deserves a 6.9 rating.

Everyone has an opinion and if you think that it deserves a '10' that's fine. However, it's not right to give it a much higher rating to boost it's overall score. Everyone gets a vote to represent what the status quo think of it: nobody deserves to shift an album's overall score based on what they think of it by themselves.

If we go by this principle than the rating of albums become spoiled by these ridiculous ideals of self-satisfaction.

Before I write my opinion, I'd like to state that I'm a long time die-hard fan of Venom
I didn't like this album at first, but after a few listens I got into it. It still didn't reach my expectations though, but it's a decent, well written album and definitely not their worst offering to date. Songs like Hammerhead, Pedal of the Metal, Lap of Gods and a few others save this album of just being average or bad. I'd rate this album with... hmmm... not over 8 but not under 7 either, I'll probably give it a 7.6.
And something else: Stop calling Venom a thrash metal band! It never was!

Maybe some of their later songs in "resurrection" and afterwards have some thrash metal elements, but generally they cannot be considered a thrash metal band. Especially their early works are NWOBHM fused with Speed metal, and because of their lyrics, they are also considered "black metal" too. Of course now I can't call them NWOBHM, but they kept the speed metal elements and their music progressed to a more... how can I call it... "rocker" direction? Which is a natural progression to a band like Venom for me.
Also (correct me if I'm wrong) if I can judge from your profile you don't really listen to thrash metal, and I don't mean just Metallica and Slayer. Try to listen to more thrash metal bands and you'll see why I can't call them a pure thrash metal band.

I'll agree with Marcel Hubregtse. Nothing that is fast necessarily lies to the thrash metal. Both Motorhead and Venom are heavily influenced by punk metal. If you see my other comment on this page, I said that Venom is more Speed metal rather than thrash. There's a huge difference between them.
I'll disagree with the "totally boring" comment though, but I won't try to make you like Venom. Venom is a "love 'em or hate 'em" kind of band, so u can either find them incredibly boring or incredibly awesome
