The 90s. It's when all the great death and black metal albums were released.

None, or more precisely all. Each period has its own merits, and I find myself usually more in love with the decade I'm living in than any other (music wise, I mean)

Considering metal didn't really exist before 1970 and the '60s is an option, it doesn't appear to be limited strictly to the confines of metal music.

That and the title of the thread reads "music", not "metal".

2011 is the best year for music. Next year 2012 will be the best year for music. For each year, we get all the great albums released in that year, and we still have the great albums from back in the day.

My favorite music comes primarily from the 80's though, with the 90's close behind. If I dug into more 90's underground, that era would probably end up being my favorite, due to the large amounts of forgotten death and black metal gems.

Easily the present time. Thanks to the internet, metal has never been as popular as it is now. And we have such a diverse range of bands coming through now. Yes there is a wall of shit you have to wade through to find the good stuff, but I genuinely believe metal is still approaching its creative peak.

Edit: Btw i'm talking about metal only.

The present time, of course.
I mean, just look at all the boner-inducing stuff that old, popular bands are shooting up these past few years.
See: newest Morbid Angel, newest Opeth, newest Iron Maiden etc. Oh, and the upcoming Metallica promises to be the album of the decade, by the sound of it so far.

yes i meant "music" when i post the title. because 60's were the early beginning of rock and 70's metal beginnings. so you can find metal and rock in each decade in their different theme and techniques.

i find 70's were the perfect era.

Well music in general I'd say the 70s was the best era. That's the stuff that influenced both metal of the 80s and the newer rock bands from the 90s and 2000s.... But if you were to ask what decade was the best for metal, i would definitly say the 80s. You had all the thrash metal bands emerging and you had Iron Maiden. Judas Priest, even though coming from the 70s, starting achieving mainstream success in the 80s. Death and Black metal were starting to evolve too

Old-school death metal is so kickass, and maybe my favorite metal subgenre.

The present time.
Sure, there is a lot of the top 40 crap, but every decade had top 40 crap, and only GOOD pop/rock/whatever music from a specific era is actually memorized.
As for metal... loads of new bands, the ability to download anything you're interested in (and mind you, it is highly important when you live in a country where the average salary is 300 euros and no record stores are present), and a lot of great bands from the past still touring the world. The present is a clear winner.

80s 80s 80s 80s 80s 80s. An good amount of really awesome bands peaked in the 80s IMO (All of Big 4, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Saxon) and generally the thrash scene was undoubtedly the strongest in the 80s, which is my favourite genre-specific scene anyways.

Ah, but you are forgetting factors like some performers passing away; for example someone could vote 90's because then you could see Death with Chuck Schuldiner live, not something you can do today.

There was music in the twenties?

Not metal, but definitely music.

There was music in The Middle Ages. Probably before that, back to Ancient Greece.

EDIT: Definitely in Ancient Greece, probably before that.

The big bang was excellent everything else blew because it was too commercial.
