Really curious about disk 3, I would never expect to hear Swallow the Sun attempt Funeral Doom.

I don't expect this album to be anything other than a chore to get through.

the Death/Doom album (1st) is the weakest but definitely a grower
the acoustic album(2nd) is enjoyable . if you like katatonia's acoustic album you are definitely going to like it
the funeral doom album (3rd) is the best out of the three and definitely contests with top funeral doom albums.
overall; as a hardcore Swallow the sun's fan, i liked the three albums and will set them on repeat for many days to come

Overall I felt the band stretched themselves a little thin. The first album felt a little weak and - considering that style is their specialty - I was disappointed at how it turned out; not enough variation within songs.
While the second album was decent albeit unremarkable, it was Mikko's time to shine and it seems he dropped the ball with the cleans.
The last album was definitely the best of the three with plenty of highlights. Despite that, the progression wasn't that articulate and failed to captivate me considering the length of those songs.
I'd probably consider this their weakest release and I don't think I'll be playing it that much.
Edit: first album actually was pretty varied within tracks, but it does sound...rushed.

I had higher expectations, this triptych can't stand up to My dying bride's masterpiece. It's not bad, but nothing spectacular.
PS - More listening is needed for more precise evaluation.

Yeah, the first disc sounds a lot like treading a path that's getting a bit too beaten. Silhouettes rips though, easily one of their highlight songs. Heartstrings is pretty good as well.
Disc 2 though... I really dig it! It's not only Mikko's performance, it also gets some dynamics out of Raivio's writing that disc 1 is lacking. Also, given Mikko's growing boredom with growling (he admitted this in a recent interview), it'll be interesting how this record will influence their heavier output in the future.

I hope this record keeps Amorphis off the top spot, it isn't the best release this year but it's far superior too that Amorphis record.

It is ok, nothing more, nothing less... The funny thing is that I liked the second acoustic disc the most, which I thought in advance could be the weakest! Heh, at least it was the pleasant surprise.... I prefer more new My Dying Bride and Draconian to this....

Like Enya's "Only Time" and 9/11, I will probably forever link this album to what happened in Paris last night

Disc 1 is painfully meh. It doesn't hold a candle to the old stuff or New Moon. Also the guitar tone used on it is really bad - no clarity whatsoever. Mikko sounds ok on it, but no more.
Disc 2 is even more meh - Mikko either tries too hard to be 'delicate' or goes too deep, instead of just singing. Which is a shame cause the material itself is pretty, and good singing could've pushed it over the top.
Disc 3 is actually pretty good though. Not amazing since I'm no huge fan of funeral doom, but they pulled it off well.

Given the situation that both Disc 2 and 3 are better than Disc 1, I wonder which path the band will take in the future.

CD1 < CD2 < CD3
Third disc is clearly the highlight. The acoustic one was quite pleasant, occasionally boring but doesn't overstay its welcome. Couldn't get through the whole first disc though, one hour of the usual average melodeath-doom from StS, but I understand its placement, they wanted to start from well trodden paths and finish with some refreshing stuff (at least for them). So far nothing more than a 7, overall good even if a tad ambitious. Could've been way worse as far as I'm concerned.

I have listened this album over and over, sometimes it was boring, sometimes exciting. Unlike others opinion, disk 1 sound better to me than disk 3 though first disk is not bad, the 3rd one is so much better, and disk 2 is good. I rate each disks separately:
disk 1: 8 (very good)
disk 2: 9 (excellent)
disk 3: 8 (very good) 9 (excellent)

Great album but for me the 1st one is the best one...not to keen on funeral doom so difficult to judge the 3rd one. And for the accoustic very good too!

I don't know what some of you are on about, the first disc is fabulous. It's, in itself, a varied and memorable collection of songs. To me, it's the centerpiece and the rest is bonus. And a lovely bonus, evidently. Amazing release!

If only they had released just part III. The first one is completely forgettable and the second one is downright awful (and I am a big Opeth (Damnation being one of my favorite albums), Katatonia, Anathema fan), the best song is by far 66°50´N,28°40´E which has no vocals. The third part is without a doubt a great doom metal album (it seems 2015 will be crowned as the Doom Metal Year - Draconian, Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, Shape of Despair).

The first 2 discs remind me of Green Carnation. Especially the 2nd.
