Here at Metal Storm headquarters, we like to relax in between all our arduous work as reviewers. Some of us drink, read, or play pool in the lounge room. Radu and I decided to play some D&D when suddenly BAM! All Stormkeep’s members smashed through the door.

From dungeon crawl to alpine odyssey, from cave quest to fortress siege, from forest foray to blizzard-beaten battlefield, Stormkeep's debut serves as the perfect soundtrack to any adventure that can be measured with a dice roll or described while wearing a wizard hat. Though a colossal melodic black metal base defines Tales Of Othertime, the diversity of flavors is enough to put to shame any other of the millions of Tolkien-infused, medieval-themed black metal albums flooding the market. The synth passages are tastefully placed and artfully constructed, and for once, we've got an album that spends as much time with the dragons as with the dungeons: power metal from Blind Guardian to Bal-Sagoth echoes through the majestic choruses, and the riffing is catchy enough to allay your Dissection withdrawal for a time. Like a tale out of time from an ancient, forgotten tome, Tales Of Othertime is filled with magic - and it's been a long time since black metal last felt so powerful.

Prime Children Of Bodom was the best Dissection worship, which more or less, is all of melodic black.

More like suggarish extreme power metal. Without the aggression of Dissection.

It certainly was more aggressive than this, even its keyboards. I mean they had harpsichords(!) as the icing on top!

Lol, terrible comparison. This sounds lik old-Rhapsody covering Emperor's "In The Nightside Eclipse". Loving every second of it. Fun as hell melodic black.

Don't know why did you bring those superior bands but yes!

Edit: Well I wouldn't say it's exactly bad. But below average.

I just heard about this album today from a best of 2021 video. And damn I'm glad I did. This album is incredible! Lyrics are hella cheesy, but the atmosphere is great and there are so many awesome riffs and solos.

Holy dragon dung! Now this is some perfect, epic, melodic black metal!

Beautiful musicianship, bitter cold (but understandable) vocals, epic fantasy story, relentless storm of metal - what more could one want?

This is like a fusion of the best elements of Emperor, Dissection, and Summoning (just listen to those medieval-sounding instrumentals!) but also with a flavor of originality!

I'll be listening to this very often... can anyone recommend any other bands that sound like this (melodic fantasy black metal)?

The first album that came to mind when I was listening to this was Dawn - Slaughtersun, but the folky parts reminded me of the early Satyricon albums.

This is pretty good actually, I had a great time listening to it. Most of the power-ish parts didn't click for me but they achieve what they want to achieve and I respect that. Great harsh vocals, great performance, goddamn epic art.

These lengthy 8+ min songs are not my cup of tea but still I wouldn't rate this album less because i enjoyed it in my back ground for 3 to 4 spins. 'The serpent's stone' stands out.

Ah! You must mean for the melodic riff which sounds suspiciously like Amon Amarth.

I don't really know about the Amon Amarth comparison but the riffing in that song is definitively delicious.
