To be honest, I am thinking that we should maybe add some more lines to make it clearer what vote abuse means. Especially for new users.

I am thinking of something in the direction of:
Please make sure that your ratings are balanced overall. You cannot just rate all your favourite albums a 10 and all albums you dislike a 1. Please use the entire range of the rating scale (1 to 10 and all numbers in between).
If we detect you are abusing the rating system along these lines we may decide to delete your votes.

Please nuke this user's totally ridiculous ratings.

Sure, looking at many of the albums given 10s I can agree. But still, 173 10s out of 215 and only one 6 can strongly be considered rating abuse. I've given one 10 in the last year because almost no album is perfect even if it's a favourite band of yours. In my 13 years on MS I've only given 24 10s in comparison. When you're starting to have hundreds of 10s, to me that's rating abuse because then you're overrating.

Imo rating abuse is also when you give several thousand ratings even if your average score is around 5 because then you just rate albums that you hardly even listened to. I'm specifically thinking of this user who in less than three years as a member has given almost 4000 ratings and always is one of the first every Friday to rate most of the newly released albums and mostly handing out low scores. It's quite obvious that he doesn't take the time to listen to 10 or 20 albums on the day of release. He's just skimming through the albums on YouTube or Spotify and then gives a low score if he doesn't like the couple of minutes he listened to.

But in the end we can only report suspicious rating patterns and then it's up to the mods to decide if it's rating abuse or not.

I mostly hand out 8s, only rating albums I think are very good. I don't really like giving low ratings so I just skip it instead and don't rate it. Also I never rate an album on release day unless it's been made available in advance giving me the chance to give it some proper spins first.

When it comes to JimmyMagnetar I'm pretty sure I've mentioned him before because of t he way he is rating. Seems like he's rating just for the sake of rating rather than giving a nuanced score after actually listening to the music. Cause I agree with you. Why listen or "listen" to so much music that you hate just so you can give a low rating?

This is just getting ridiculous. When you actually start looking at the album ratings and the 10s given you come across a lot of users with the same rating pattern. This one has given 2600 ratings in just a year as a member. 1581 10s with an average score of 9.27.

Just checking the ratings given and average score from those giving this album a 10 makes me realise that this thread is totally unnecessary and a lost cause and I won't report rating abuse anymore because there's no point. I know this is the new Insomnium album and it will get a high rating by default but still, the rating pattern of those giving it 10 just make me feel like it's a waste of time reporting them.

I dont find JimmyMagnetar's ratings suspicious.
But that is an old discussion, we -- the two of us and others -- have talked about this before. I dont find anything abusive about low ratings in general, that is as long as they dont violate our rules.

I did not even know you had so many 5s and 6s, but somehow you never pop up all over the place, you do not rate everything like that Jimmy Magnetar seems to rate. There was someone earlier that had even doubts the guy listens to full albums.

For me 5 and 6 are not low ratings. "Low" is below that for me.
You end up with so many 5 and 6 ratings like me if you actually rate more or less all albums you listen to at least once, even if you dont like them too much.

6 means "average", 5 means "not good", so they are negative ratings, not as negative as 3s or 4s, but still negative. Just saying...

I raised my suspicion about that user, now maybe someone will look into it, maybe not.
