Which would you say is the epitome of death metal vocalists? The best of the bunch? Do you like these vocalists because you can understand what they're saying? Or do you like these vocalists because of the sheer brutality they put out with their voices?? choose wisely. . .

Glen Benton from Deicide. His growls and shrieks on the first few albums are insane.

this is what I feared. . . . . .
Glen Benton to me has always sounded like he has a combination of a porcupine up his ass and extreme constipation

Agree with LG Petrov... He's awesome, Very brutal but Audible at the same time. IMO Barnes isn't that good, if you want really good low vocals I think Craig Pillard who played in Incantation is sick, He sounds really "Evil". Especially at the End of the song... That growl is sick

Indeed he is a good vocalist.... But this thread is about Death Metal
IMO One of the absolute Best Vocalist in DM is John Tardy... his vocals (during the early albums at least) are simply awesome.

My favorites are:
Muhammed Sucimez (Necrophagist)
Karl Willets (Bolt Thrower)
Frank Mullen (Suffocation) On Pierced From Within.
Why are they my favorites? Well, because they you can understand some of what they're growlin'.

Mikael Akerfeldt. This guy can (or could) actually really sing while growling. Plus his growl is incredibly powerful. "Ghost of Perdition" is the best song with growling ever.

Dan Swano as a close second.

Pretty much, I'd say it's down to who has the better cleans to decide. I'd admit Akerfeldt probably has the edge there.

I happen to be listening to "Godhead's Lament" at this very moment, so my vote goes to Akerfeldt. Also, as mediocre (for Opeth standards) as "Heritage" is, Mikael's vocals there are out of this world.

Mikael Akerfeldt is an awesome singer, his growls alone are worth it in terms of Death metal. But its his variety and the control of his changes raise him a touch above most vocalist in all genres.

First off, what gives with the lack of Papa Chuck Schuldiner on these lists?
But other than that,
Akerfeldt is boss when hes not making shitty progressive rock (heritage)
Johan Hegg = Thor

Oh, and Oli Sykes. He rulez.
Had you going there for a second didn't I?

I just read that last part in George Carlin's voice for some odd reason. . . 'twas quite amusing

anyways, anyone who says Chris Barnes sucks hurt my feelings. . . I'm going to go put on my dunce cap and cry in the corner. .

Strange, Mikael Åkerfeldt's growls have always sounded incredibly average to me.

My two favorites would have to be John Gallagher from Dying Fetus or Erik Rundqvist of Vomitory. Both deep, guttural tone.

Henri Sattler of God Dethroned for being comprehendable and one of the more powerful death growlers out there, Brett Hoffman because he's awesome get the hell over it, early David Vincent for his unique raspier styled vocals. Ross Dolan for sounding like Satan, Lord Worm for sounding like a rabid pitbull tearing apart your internal organs, and Chuck Schuldiner because... No explanation needed.
