When a trailblazing monster of a cult act turns into a '70s prog tribute band, there's surely going to be some backlash. Opeth have been getting loads of backlash (deserved and not) since 2011's Heritage. I have no doubt that Sorceress will be met by many with at least the same amount of hostility. Whether or not it's justified is a different story; let's see how different they are.

Tried to listen to this again today...I couldn't do it. Heritage was a learning curve and I thought Pale Communion was awesome. But this...this is a complete mess.

Yeah, well, some nice moments here and there, but it just kind of flows by unnoticed. I totally respect their change of direction, but it's too bad that they seem to be incapable of creating that top-notch music we came to expect from them. They're down there among the masses of good, but not great, bands now.

I agree with you on Heritage being a transitional album which eventually led to the awesome Pale Communion. Have no time to listen to Sorceress at the moment, King Crimson concert approaching. Will listen this weekend. On a side note, the only merch I own by Opeth is the Pale Communion t-shirt, because I never really liked their metal stuff (SHITSTORM INC?) but, myself being mostly a prog-fan, Pale Communion is fucking great.

This is like saying that you can play OSDM by acoustic guitar and still the mood will be the same.

Technically, the mood should remain the same if it's a good enough song. I mean, it might not be as aggressive or heavy, but the mood? That should be able to translate pretty good. Otherwise it's just a band pretending to play death metal by down tuning and using lots of distortion.

I could argue that a good enough song would have the same mood regardless of if it's played on distorted guitars or a glockenspiel. Other factors will change, but the mood shouldn't.;)

That's not to say anything about the last three Opeth albums, though.

Personally think this is a very good album and better constructed with imagination then Heritage or Pale Communion are...the instruments sound alive and that is really different and nice

Not necessarily a bad thing - plenty of great bands with a dominant writer. It just seems they (Mikael) have run out of juice.

if the "Dictator" is actually a good musician that is good (Pixies). Pixies > Opeth

Way too much mid-bass in the production. Bloated, muddy sound.

Some great songs, but very poor flow. Songwriting's been declining since Heritage.

Some of the lyrics are incredibly cringe-worthy and I wasn't really enjoying the first half of the album, but I find the compositions far more interesting and engaging in the latter half. Not surprised by the polarizing opinions here. I definitely don't think it's quite as bad as a lot of people are making it out to be, but it also doesn't seem to be anything remarkable. I'm going to need some more listens to see if it sinks in a bit.

All I can say right now is that its better than PL and Heritage. More likeable, I would say, BUT it didnt give me any strong feeling.
Best songs: Sorceress, Strange Brew, Chrysalis, The Wilde Flowers.

Worst album released by Opeth so far... I like about half the songs and I hate the production, and it's not that I''m crazy about those few songs I like either.
