Germany, Wacken - Wacken Open Air 2009

20 years! 20 fucking years! That's how long the Wacken Open Air exists already. And it has come a long way from a garden party with 800 guests and 6 bands to the biggest metal festival in the world with more than 75,000 visitors and close to 70 bands performing on four stages. Said stages have seen performances by nearly every important band in the world of metal as well as numerous underground acts, so expectations are quite high for this year's lineup. Already confirmed are several fan favorites from the previous editions, such as Saxon, Motรถrhead, Machine Head, In Flames and Doro who has announced a special Warlock show. Further highlights are the two hour farewell show of metal veterans Running Wild, who will show the young lads how pirate metal is really done, and the performance of recently reunited viking metal legends Einherjer. And as always the lineup will please metalheads of every age: the older folks will be delighted by the confirmations of Heaven And Hell and UFO while Bullet For My Valentine, Walls Of Jericho and Bring Me The Horizon represent the newest generation of metal(-related) music.

The namesake and host of the festival is the small town of Wacken in Northern Germany. For just short of a week the town's population skyrockets from a mere 2,000 souls and turns the village into the world's metal mecca. The town is located 10 km north of Itzehoe and 50 km north/west of Hamburg. There will be shuttle buses from the festival site to the train station in Itzehoe as well as to the airports in both Hamburg and Lübeck. For more info on getting there and away check the festival page here.

The festival is sold out since December already. If you haven't got your ticket yet, but want to go there nonetheless, you can circumvent the black marketing going on eBay and reduce the risk of acquiring fake tickets by using the ticket exchange in the official forum. In this exchange the Wacken staff supervises the ticket prices and acts as trust which means that the seller sends the ticket(s) to the staff who verifies the authenticity of the ticket(s) and reports it to the buyer. After the buyer has transferred the money to the seller, the Wacken staff will pass on the ticket(s) to the buyer. More information on this model can be found here (in German).

Valentine B, I'm sure the only reason you're going to Wacken is to get laid!

Uncalled for. Wacken is not that good a place to get laid anyway, except if you bring your girl/boyfriend with you.

One of the unfortunate restrictions of having a tent in the press campsite - you can't get anyone else backstage with you.

Well then you just have to find one who has a tent outside the press area or one who have access to the press area

Well that's not easy because when you've checked as press, the way into the festival for press is in the back end, so I don't actually go through the other campsites. I would need to carry my tent, etc. through the whole arena to get there.

I'm not complaining though. Both sides have ups and downs.

What do you mean it's not that easy? Piece of pie, you just take the normal entrance, put up your tent and everything is fine, just that you have another wristband than everyone around you. And there's also another way from the press area to the campsites which doesn't go through the festival site.

Actually you're right, there are those roads aren't there. Me and Jerry navigated them in 2007 to find our way out onto the main road.

well, i don't know if Slayer would have accepted to do a third consecutive summer of playing european festivals, it would have been nice sure, but for them it could have been a bit redundant, and i'm not surprised(nor do i blame them) for touring the US during the summer.

what i am pissed off at is Saxon's announcement that they're gonna play just one song from each album(which means that for Denim and Leather it's gonna be Princess of the Night vs. the title track, and i love both songs to death)

other than that it's looking pretty cool imo, i'm looking forward to the Wacken Anthem(We Are the Metalheads), Running Wild's last gig, and all the other bands of course

OKay one more time...

Thin Lizzt without Phil Lynnott is NOT Thin Lizzy. Phil defined Thin Lizzy's sound and was the singular most important member of the band.

i know why you would say that, but still i believe it's as Freddie Mercury said: the show must go on, saying that even though they may be gone the surviving band members should perpetuate their music and shit...

Criss and Jon Oliva once made a pact kind of like this

The running order(with hours) has been published on the site

http://www.wacken.com/uploads/media/Wacken_runing_order_ts_25062009_agl3_printable_01.pdf

my only complaints are that the WOA Metal Battle Romania winner(which is X-plod, a band made up entirely of kids) clashes with Nevermore, Hammerfall plays only one hour and Thin Lizzy clashes with Running Wild.. anyway i wasn't hellbent on Thin Lizzy and Hammerfall still plays some good stuff live these days so i'm not really complaining.

as for good stuff... the second day looks like an awesome 8 hour metal-marathon for me, then 1 hour and a half of SAXON on the last day and then Korpiklaani/Gwar! awesome ending!

Why the hell are bullet for my valentine ALWAYS there EVERY year?!

they were only last year, but they had to cancel at the last moment so they're back this year

i quite like their non-metalcore stuff so i'm not complaining, excellent guitar work, too bad the vocals and lyrics are so cheesy, though they are really catchy sometimes.

Although Thin Lizzy is of course not Thin Lizzy they are still superior to anything Running Wild has done and will ever do. Thanks God they are calling it quits

They aren't. The statement says: "I can only apologize to everyone who has supported us over the years, but we will be back up to full speed soon." So it't a break from live duty at best.

Okay, than I misunderstood, because I read somewhere that the Runnin Wild show at Wacken would be a special farewell show.
