I have waited so long for this. I'm absolutely stoked, and the little bit that I've heard on the bandcamp page is top notch.

Finally!!! Absolutely love it, can't stop listening. I kinda envy the new fans that will listen to the whole Requiem for the first time as it was intended.

Yeah, one is meant to listen from Pianissimo, then Mezzo Forte and finally Fortissimo. Although the "Heavy to calm" approach is also quite interesting in itself.

All three were written and recorded at the same time. The band planned to release all of them at once but the label decided that was not a good commercial move and so they started releasing them separately. The order in which they were released probably also was more commercially planned rather than artistically.

Got my CD copy today. Will need to set aside 3 hours on the weekend to finally listen to all 3 together.
Was expecting there to be more piano, to be honest. London only sings on this.

Same with me about the piano. Im actually a bit disappointed with the compositions. More with follow in my upcoming review.

Pianissimo:
1.
(especially as a direction) very soft or softly
2.
a passage performed or marked to be performed very softly

I am aware of what the term means. The reason I commented on the piano was because it was used rarely (probably just once or twice tops) and I really enjoyed it and wondered why they didn't use it more considering some of the compositions being kind of... eh.

Very cool - I felt like I was watching an opera performance while listening to these lamentations and orchestral pieces. I'll probably find myself revisiting their albums that mix the gothic metal and classical music more than this one because I somewhat agree that this one lacks a bit of variety. But, it's a very unique experience coming from a metal band. I appreciate that.
Oh! And "Thanatos Kyrie Eleison" (Greek for "Lord Death, Have Mercy!") on the song "Kyrie Eleison" is such a cool callback to "Drink the Midnight Hymn" from Virgin Black's debut album Sombre Romantic
I'm going to listen to the intended order of the Requiem trilogy. So Mezzo Forte is next for me!

I take back what I said in an older post about this needing more piano. There is the right amount of it.

I agree that at times it struggles to keep up the momentum and interest. But when put into context this album does sound much more important and enjoyable. This is were the melodies and tone of the Requiem series start and are first presented. And they will be revisited through other lenses. Performance-wise it is impecable though. Rowan's voice comes now from a true professional and combined with the gorgeous lead guest soprano, Susan Johnson, they are a powerhouse of gothic tragedy.

They really seem to be very proud of "Drink the Midnight Hymn". The same melodies are there although slower and in a classical setting. Even the lyrics are the same but in latin. This won't be the last time either. It's facinating how the band managed to effortlessly reference itself without being too obvious about it. It makes the Requien theme far more grounded.

The first album released from the Requiem series. I remember the first time when I listened to the first song, "Requiem, Kyrie". Susan Johnson started singing, then the strings went on a crescendo and Rowan blew me away with his "Soooooorroooooow eeeever awaaaaits on jooooooy".
